Winter and the holiday season brings forth the arrival of eggnog. While most of us are familiar with drinking cold eggnog with a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg, it actually has a rich tradition as an alcoholic beverage. Because of that, we’re going to take the classic White Russian and add a twist to it by making an eggnog white russian.
What is Eggnog?
Eggnog, or egg-nog, is a very rich drink made up of milk, cream, sugar, and eggs. In its conception and history, eggnog was an alcoholic drink often being mixed into a punch with brandy or bourbon.
Our Approach to an Eggnog White Russian
Even though I’m slightly lactose intolerant, I love both eggnog and white russians. I thought it would be fun to combine the two to create a decadent drink.
The holiday variant we are preparing today swaps the heavy cream out for eggnog. After all, what cream is heavier than eggnog? So really, this is like taking a very rich cocktail and making it even richer.
As we are getting pretty heavy into dessert territory with the eggnog version of this drink, I think it is more than reasonable to think about whipped cream and spices on this drink.
In our preparation, we’ll be keeping with the holiday colors and using raspberries and mint to garnish our drink. The mint gives you some wonderful aromatics with each sip, and the bright acidity of the raspberries will help with the thick mouthfeel of this drink.
What Pairs with Eggnog White Russians?
Just like with our normal White Russian pairings, anything that you’d eat with ice cream should pair very well with this drink. To capitalize on the spice notes, I’d recommend pairing it with pumpkin pie or an apple crisp.
You can make this entire cocktail in your glass by layering the alcohol in. If using this method, all you need are the following:
- Old fashioned glass (the short wide ones)
- Shot glass or bartender tool for measuring
- Stirring tool
- Ice to fill your cup ½ full
- 1 ounce vodka
- 1 ounce kahlua
- 3 ounces eggnog
- 2-3 raspberries (optional)
- 1 sprig of fresh mint (optional)
- Fill cup half way with ice
- Pour in the vodka, kahlua, and eggnog
- Give it a quick stir
- Add the raspberries and mint to garnish
- Serve and enjoy responsibly
